A cool but sunny start to the day, 13C, but, climbing to 23C by late afternoon.
We are up, reasonably, early, we get first turn on the service point, which was Kathleen's ambition.
On the road shortly after 08:00am.
Oloron Sainte-Marie, D938-D947-N10-A63-A10/N10-D910, brings us to Lac de Saint-Cyr (Poitiers) (46.721838, 0.456127) , in 314 miles, almost all free, with just a 3.80Euro toll for a small section of the A63.
Very light traffic, except for the huge volume of HGVs on the N10, but, they are all sticking to the right hand lane, so, no problem overtaking them.
A small amount of excitement at Poitiers, we leave the N10 to join the D910, heading for our chosen Aire (Lac de Saint-Cyr (Poitiers), and are stopped in a Police Road Block. They are checking peoples paper work, in particular there "Attestation", fortunately, despite Kathleen saying it was a waste of time, I had painstakingly written out two copies (one each). A young, and very polite Gendarme spoke to Kathleen, all in French, asking for our papers. I think, she quite enjoyed the experience! Happy, he waved us on our way.
Our lunch stop was taken at Angouleme, in the car park of a Commercial Centre. I took the opportunity to visit the Auchan supermarket, in the centre and bought various "treats" (chocolate and Magnums), plus wine, pate, baguette, apple tart. This formed our evening meal, sitting in the sun, with a glass or wine.
A photograph for family and friends, so you can see, we have come to no harm, Kathleen working hard.

Weather not really of consequence, since we expect to be travelling for most of the day again today, but, sunny in the morning, turning to rain as we reach Chartres, raining steadily by Neufchatel-en-Bray.
277 miles we are very familiar with, having done it numerous times, D910 - A10/N10 - A154/D154 - D61055 - A28, all toll free.
We arrive at Neufchatel-en-Bray, Aire St Claire (49.737185 1.429569). All in order, as usual, but, toilet, shower etc not in use, presumably because of CoronaVirus.
Saturday, 21st March 2020
Brrr.. can tell we are well North, only 6C this morning, as I get ready to leave Neufchatel-en-Bray, Aire St Claire (49.737185 1.429569).
We are on our way by 08:30, only about 100 miles to Tunnel.
We have reservation at 18:30. The plan is, if we can only get our reserved slot, stop off at somewhere in Kent (Canterbury P&R, or, there are a couple of CAMC sites which are possibles). If we are fortunate enough to get an earlier slot, we might even make it home today, but, with 350 miles to go, after we exit tunnel, that is doubtful.
Excellent time to the Tunnel Terminal. Roads are almost empty, although, we begin to encounter "Motorhome traffic" as we approach Calais.
We see several Police check points, but, we just get a wave, not stopped.
Even with a coffee stop, we are at Tunnel Terminal by 11:15. We are offered earlier crossing (12:20) at no extra charge. Despite all of the rumours and stories of massive queues, there is only one "file" of Motorhomes and Caravans, plus, one solitary car, at boarding time. All shops and cafe in Terminal are closed, and, we are told we must stay in vehicle, during crossing.
Given the UK/France time difference, we are unloaded and on the M20 by 11:55 UK time.
Queues at M25 Dartford Crossing (what is new), but, other than that, we make excellent progress, we are heading north on M11, we even stop at M11 Services for coffee and to polish off the apple tart I bought in France.
Thinking we will be home today, when overhead motorway signs announce M11 Northbound Closed ahead. We have managed to drive 1,000 miles, through Spain and France, with no hold ups, welcome to the UK.
Kathleen navigates us across country, to A1(M), just south of Huntingdon, A1(M) northbound is closed too! We eventually manage to join the A1(M) further North. Getting a bit tired now, and, navigating plus closed roads, have tempers a bit frayed.
We give up on making it home today, and divert to Ferry Meadows CAMC Site (N52.56053, W0.30593), Peterborough.

To France, and on to Loire
Thursday, 27th February 2020
A leisurely morning, and we leave, Ferry Meadows CAMC Site (N52.56053, W0.30593), just before 12:00.
Another easy day of driving, with no major hold-ups.
This in part due to the McCaffery refusal to obey instructions. As we head south on the A1(M), the overhead signs are telling us, M11 closed due to an accident between J12 and J11. Kathleen decides to ignore this, and sides with the Sat-Nav as it directs us onto the M11. It would appear, most people obeyed the signs, the M11 is almost empty of traffic, and, there is no sign of an accident or a road closure.
We are booked on the 20:30 shuttle, but, arrive way too early at 15:30.
As usual, we are offered an earlier crossing, but, with a sting in the tale, we can go one hour earlier (19:20), for no additional charge, or, we can go straight on, at 15:45, but, that will cost an ADDITIONAL £120, since our original booking cost only £108, we decline this generous(?) offer.
We park in the waiting area, beside the terminal, and spend the time eating our evening meal and browsing the Tunnel construction exhibits. For once, the terminal building is quiet, and clean, very impressive.
Remembering that France is one hour ahead of the UK, we disembark from the shuttle at 21:00 French time.
The original plan is to drive to the Aire at Wissant (about 40 miles away), but, Kathleen is anxious about staying somewhere which is an unknown quantity to her. A quick rethink, the co-ordinates for the Aire at Neufchatel-en-Bray (N49.73781 E1.42803) are entered into the Sat-Nav and, unusually for us, after the free section of the A16 south, we take the toll section from Boulogne-our-Mer, to arrive at Neufchatel-en-Bray shortly before midnight, having done 292 miles today.
The Neufchatel-en-Bray Aire is operated by the same chap who owns Camping St Claire. As Aires go, it is a trifle expensive at 12Euro, but, it has automated barrier entry (allowing to arrive/leave at any time of day), with pay on exit, Marked hard standing bays, each with Electric hook up, free Wifi, Service point, washing machines, toilets and shower.
Friday, 28th February 2020
Neufchatel-en-Bray is a favourite of ours, we briefly think of lingering here for a few days, but, the weather is poor, 1C, thick frost, and forecast for rain.
Instead, today, we make for a stop-over we have used before, en-route to Spain, Montoire-sur-Loir. (N47 45' 27.5" E0 52' 10.4").
We stop off for lunch at an Aire in Bonneval (N48.17953
W1.3889). It is a pleasant small town, and, would probably be a suitable night stop, in an emergency, but, the promised EHU is no where in evidence, and the service point has seen better days. There is a clean and functional toilet.
On arrival, at Montoire-sur-Loir, we find the service point is not working, no water, no electricity.
A quick search on "SearchforSite", turns up an Aire at St
Calais, about 15 miles away. The co-ordinates take us to a pleasant lakeside location, exactly as described, unfortunately, there are high barriers in place, so, we cannot enter. Instead, we find an alternative at St Calais (N47 55'27" E0 44' 41"), not terribly scenic, but, quiet, safe, with service point, and, two working EHU points.

Wednesday, 26th February 2020 - on our way
Family events (first grand-daughter's wedding), mean we are leaving on our annual European Trip, later than usual.
The weather in the UK has been appalling, thanks to Storm Denis. It would appear from the news that half the country is under water, although, here on Tyneside, we seem to have escaped the worst of it, a lot of strong winds and rain.
But, Monday 17th Feb 2020 is mild and dry, so, Lawns are cut and garden tidied, ready for someone (Claire?) to look after things in our absence, it should be a month or two, before the grass begins growing in earnest.
Tuesday 18th Feb, another dry day, so, packing continues, bicycles etc secured in rear Garage.
Kathleen is socialising with her "school friends" (all in their 70's now, so, no longer wearing their school uniforms!).
Wednesday 19th February through Saturday. 22nd Feb are taken up with "last minute essential tasks", prior to wedding, and departure:
The original intention was to go via Windsor, and visit Gary,Susana, Gabriel and Salma. But, because of the dreadful weather our first stop-over option, Liquid Leisure (N51.474581 W0.559103) is waterlogged and not accepting Motorhomes, and, our second choice Queens Acre CS (N51.4903 W0.6819), is not contactable.
So, with regret, we will have to give Windsor a miss, and call on our way home, at the end of this trip.
We have bright sunshine, but, frost and only 1C, as we do. final preparations, and set off.
195 uneventful miles, to arrive at Ferry Meadows CAMC Site (N52.56053, W0.30593).
Still bright sunshine, and 7C, when we arrive, so, a pleasant walk around the Nene Valley Park, to stretch the legs after driving.

- hair "do" etc., not for me, I hasten to add ;) .
- lunch with sisters, for a last minute gossip, and complain about how easy men have life.
- wedding and following days hangover

Ferry Meadows CAMC Site (contd)
Wednesday, 20th March 2019
Fog at first, but, by 9:00, it is clear, and a little blue sky, at 10C.
The weather soon improves to be warm enough to sit outside a pub, having lunch!
We explore more the "Green Wheel", a sort of cyclists "ring road" around Peterborough.
We cover 15.4 miles, mostly on good tarmac cycling tracks, but, with enough "rough stuff" to raise an "observation" or two from Kathleen.
We stop at the Boathouse Pub, where we are able to sit outside in the sun and have a very pleasant lunch (superior to The
Granary, yesterday). The remainder of the afternoon is spent sitting in the sunshine, reading and eating Magnums. It is a hard life.
Thursday, 21st March 2019
It looks as if it is going to be an even better day, typical, when we are leaving!
Just under 200 miles, major roads for most of the way.

Monday, 18th March 2019
Cloudy with a little sun, and 11C, promising.
We get the bicycles out, for the first time this trip. Eight Miles around the Nene Valley Park, and, to the nearest Supermarket. There are so many cycle tracks, we will have to acquire a map, or, become hopelessly lost!
After a spell of sitting in in the sun (yes, it is true, sitting in the sun, in the UK, in mid-March), we round off the afternoon with a three mile walk through Nene Park.
Tuesday, 19th March 2019
A mix of cloud and sun, with a very reasonable 15C.
Cycle riding, with the aid of a map today! Via route 62 to Bretton, then, along the "Green Wheel" route, and route 12 to town centre, and then, back to Ferry Meadows. 11.80 Miles.
The plan today, eating wise, is Lunch at The Cuckoo, but, when we passed yesterday, it looked as if building works were in progress, and, today, they are not answering their
phone, so, it is The Granary, a Beefeater Pub. Very pleasant place, but, with adequate rather than remarkable food.

Friday, 15th March 2019
Mild, at 10C, but, still windy, at least sun is shining!
The "plan" today is to walk along the signed Riverside Walk, from Hertford to Ware. This forms part of a much longer route, The Lea Valley Walk, (50 miles), which goes from Luton to Lime House Basin, East London. We content ourselves with a little over 7 miles, today, about 5 miles of which is along the River Lea Valley!
We are reasonably fortunate with the weather, it does, eventually, begin to rain, heavily, but, fortunately, by then, we are in Ware, and, conveniently, outside of a Coffee shop!
A little shopping for more essentials (ie Red Wine), and, we catch a bus back to Hertford.
Saturday, 16th March 2019
Mild, 12C, but, even windier!
Lunch in the Barge Inn, courtesy or Kathleen, very pleasant.
Sunday, 17th March 2019
Blue sky, sunshine and 8C when we wake up, maybe weather is improving?
A short (65 mile) drive, to Ferry Meadows CAMC Site (N52.56053, W0.30593).
Ferry Meadows CAMC Site is a typical, CAMC Site, Clean, well organised, good facilities. It is surrounded by the Nene Valley Country Park , with miles of walking and cycling trails, plus other activities. The Nene Valley Heritage Steam Railway also runs through the park, an extra treat for Steam enthusiasts! It is also within easy cycling/walking distance of Peterborough.
We fit in a 3.3 mile walk, around the lakes, the weather is kind, we have blue skies and sunshine.

Ferry Meadows and on to Chertsey
Tuesday, 30th January 2018
A bright and sunny day, temperatures about what one would expect, for January in the UK, ie 6-8C, altogether a very pleasant day.
Lazing about and reading books, or, Private Eye, in my case, until lunch time.
After lunch, the bicycles are unloaded. This will be our first bicycle ride for six weeks, due to combination of, poor weather, winter coughs and colds, post Christmas idleness.
Peterborough certainly appears to have excellent cycling infrastructure, we are able to ride from the campsite to the city centre (3 miles) on tarmac cycle track / shared path, without once going on the road.
In total we cycle approximately 9 miles, not bad for our first day back in the saddle after a six week break.
It is the first time I have ever been to Peterborough, I am pleasantly surprised, initial impressions are very favourable, the campsite is clean and well organised (as you would expect from the Caravan and Motorhome Club), the Nene Valley Country Park around the site, is well organised and attractive, and, the town centre is pleasant with a good selection of shops (if you like shops).
The site is large, and there are many activities available in the Nene Valley Country Park, so, I would suspect the site is popular with families, which in turn, probably means it is busy during School Holiday times, but, it is pleasantly quiet during our stay, just as we like it!
Wednesday, 31st January 2018
After yesterday, which was rather pleasant, weatherise, today is dull, and, it begins to rain just as I am in the middle of packing up (ie disconnection TV aerial, rolling up EHU cable etc.
We have a leisurely departure (10:00) and make our way the approximately 100 miles to Chertsey.
Despite the fairly constant rain, it is an easy run, even the M25 is moving at a steady speed, so, we arrive at Chertsey Camping and Caravan Club Site (N51 23'27" W0 29'21") before the 13:00 booking in time.
We have been to the Chertsey C&CC Site several times. For essentially a "city" site, (we are only a few miles from Central London), it is rather nice, but, being also just a few miles from Heathrow Airport, one of the busiest airports in the world, some aircraft noise is to be expected. Not enough to spoil our enjoyment, or keep us awake.
The weather brightens, with full sunshine for a while, but, by evening, it is very cold.
Today is our Wedding Anniversary (31 years), after getting booked in and set up, we head to the Kingfisher for a celebratory meal. Definitely a good choice, very pleasant surroundings, right by the River Thames, and a good choice of dishes, some unusual items and, some more traditional meals.

Ferry Meadows
Monday, 29th January 2018
We are booked in to Chertsey Camping and Caravan Club Site, from Wednesday, to visit son Gary, Susana, Gabriel and Salma (it being Salma's second birthday on Thursday 1st February)
The plan is to stay somewhere between home and Chertsey for a couple of days.
I have an inclination to head for the Lee Valley Dobbs Weir Site, it is right alongside what looks like good cycling, alongside the River Lee Navigation. I have seen several programs on TV, extolling the virtues of the Lee Valley Country Park and surrounding area.
An early start, light traffic and a lunch stop, with home made soup, provided by Kathleen's kitchen skills, everything is going well, we are south of Grantham, and on target to arrive at Lee Valley by about 16:30.
Ominously, we are overtaken by an ambulance, siren wailing and blue lights flashing, and we can see, that traffic coming to a halt up ahead. It is 14:00.
We spend the next two hours stationery on the A1, the only excitement being having to move over as far as possible, to allow two Police vehicles to reach the accident scene, and, occasional road traffic reports on the radio, telling us, there is a hold up on the A1 southbound, at Stamford. We already know that, we are sitting in it.
The traffic eventually begins to move at 16:00, and there is no sign of any incident, not even some roadside debris.
There is no way we are going to reach Lee Valley in daylight, so, Kathleen rings the nearest CAMC site, which happens to be Ferry Meadows CAMC site.
So, that is how we come to be just outside of Peterborough, clearly, we are not destined to visit Lee Valley, at least, not on this trip!
